The introduction of the art project :”How to become artist?” Unknown May 29, 2014 No Comment

It is through the two forms dialogue, by visual language, with the exhibition, and by verbal language, with the open discussion I would like to build not only an understanding among art students about their career, but also the understanding among artists and audiences.

An art project by Ta My Nhan, in collaboration with ZeroStation (www.zerostationvn.org)

At the present, there are three universities of art located in three regions of Viet Nam: Viet Nam University of Fine Arts (HaNoi city), Hue University, the college of of Arts (Hue city), Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts (Ho Chi Minh city). In 2011, the undergraduate enrollment quotas of regular system are as following:

- 100 students (Viet Nam University of Fine Arts) (The university offers five-year Bachelor of Fine Art program and two-year full-time or three-year part-time Master of Arts program in Painting, Graphic Art and Sculpture, and four-year Bachelor of Fine Art Education program)

- 170 students (Hue University, the College of Arts) (The university offers five-year Bachelor of Fine Art program in Painting, applied arts, printmaking, sculpture, and Fine Art Education program)

- 180 students (Ho chi minh city University of Fine Arts) (The university offers five-year Bachelor of Fine Art program in Painting, printmaking and Sculpture, and four-year Bachelor of Fine Art Education program and applied arts)

Every year, the average number of art students graduating bachelor programs of fine arts in Vietnam is 450. The question is: among them who will become artists? What did the students acquire during their time in university? What they have learned in university will be useful in helping them to become the artists, or in helping them to survive in real life?

As a fourth-year student of the college of art, Hue City, who now comes to very close the last year in university, these issues actually makes me worry. From this, I want to collaborate with ZeroStation to make the art project to answer, or at least, to awaken about them. In this art project " How to Become Artist", I will use exhibition and discussion practice to touch on these issues. The project's structure will be built in two sections.

The first section will be an exhibition where art works of some invited art students from Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts will be juxtaposed together with the art works which mark periods of creation of the invited artists who also have been graduated from Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts and who now could be considered successful in Vietnamese art scene.

The second section will be an open discussion where not only invited students and invited artists, but also the audience, journalists could be invited to give their opinions about art education, about the difficulty or happiness in the road to become artists, or about their struggles in the real life which is not like what they think of when they are in university, etc.

It is through the two forms of dialogue, by visual language, with the exhibition, and by verbal language, with the open discussion I would like to build not only an understanding among art students about their career, but also the understanding among artists and audiences.

Certainly, from the perspective of an art project, there is no ambition from my part to point out obviously all the existing problems in the process from a student to an artist, especially in Vietnam. Oppositely, this project just tries, through exhibition and discussion practice, to present some questions of mine on this process in order to create a productively dialoguing space. I really hope that the project, by using visual materials of the exhibition, and by using an opened discussion among students, artists and audience on a same subject, could build a critical encounter, not only among art students with artists, but also among art students with students from other universities and with art lovers

The last words I would like to say thanks to ZeroStation for the sponsorship and the help in organizing fand advising for the project.
